Accessible Deck Design
“Universal Design” was coined in the 1960s when the Freedom House plan was developed and presented by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) for the first-ever Conference on Aging under the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Doorways were widened, light switches were located in more convenient locations, and plumbing fixtures were arranged for better access, among other innovations. The discussion begun then continues today with regard to the ideal design features for wheelchair riders, walkers, and individuals with a variety of mobility needs.
