A great time was had by all... an opportunity to interact with and renew friendships with fence association "buddies" ... and the food was delicious! It was great to see our Chapter President, Bob Masten, who had just returned from an extended overseas business trip.
|
|
|
|
The after-dinner speaker was our Chapter President Bob Masten. Bob brought all of us up-to-date on the work going on in preparation for the "table-top" regional trade show which will be incorporated (for the first time) in our next September "By the Sea" get-together, which will be in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Bob emphasized the importance of promoting the Carolinas Fence Association to fencing industry contacts. He reminded us that one great way for non-members to see the benefits of the association is to invite them to a monthly meeting... and that the CFA "picks up the tab" for a first-time visitor.
Bob commended committee leadership and officers for their dedicated efforts in preparing for upcoming events and activities.

Rod reminded us how that membership in the American Fence Association (AFA) is a great investment in the success of your business. He pointed out that this success is a result of putting customer satisfaction first and foremost with the highest quality work which meets local, state and national standards.
He spent time reviewing how that the AFA has done a great deal of work with standards, having partnered with ASTM to help produce specification manuals for use in the fencing industry.
Rod emphasized the importance of educational programs. He reminded the attendees of the many training programs offered by the AFA. He made mention of how pleased he was that a number of AFA chapters were making fence technology training a part of their periodic chapter meetings.

August 9, 2011. Wyndham Hotel. Durham, NC

At the conclusion of a delicious dinner our Chapter President, Bob Masten, called our meeting to order. Bob reminded everyone of the upcoming “By the Sea” get-together in Wilmington, NC the weekend of Sept 22-25. Please check-out the “By the Sea” announcement on the CFAs chapter page on the American Fence Association website (www.americanfenceassociation.com).
|
Bob Masten announced some new first-time additions to the “By the Sea” event.
These will include the following:
1. The annual Silent Auction will include a “Ladies only” section!
2. A 32gb WiFi IPAD 2 will be the raffle giveaway prize this year.
3. High quality IZOD golf shirts (with a CFA logo) will be on sale ($35). See picture above.

|
Bob then introduced our guest speaker, Chris Younts, Chief Financial Officer of Hidden Wounds. This organization is a non-profit group which is reaching out to help combat veterans who are suffering from psychological problems. Hidden Wounds was founded in loving memory of Iraq War veteran, Marine Lance Corporal Mills Palmer Bigham. Chris was co-founder of the organization along with Anna Bigham (sister of the deceased veteran). Without question, Chris gave an “emotionally charged” presentation!
The mission of Hidden Wounds, a non-profit organization, is to provide peace of mind and comfort for military personnel suffering from combat stress injuries such as PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury), and other psychological post war challenges until such time as the Veteran’s Administration or the Veteran’s Affairs agencies are prepared to deliver long-term services to our clients through government programs. Hidden Wounds also seeks to save lives through fundraising efforts that allow Hidden Wounds to provide counseling and act as a liaison between counselors, veterans, and families, and to provide publicity to dispel fear, lower the stigma, and grant the will to overcome emotional and psychological challenges to our military heroes.
|
|
Chris encouraged all members present to visit their website (www.hiddenwounds.org), to seriously consider hiring vets who are looking for work and to pray for the many needs of our country’s combat veterans. He took time to answer questions from the audience. At the end of Chris’ presentation Bob Masten reminded everyone of the close proximity of our fence businesses to many military bases in the Carolinas. And because of this proximity, we should be motivated to look for opportunities to help and to make donations (which are tax deductible) to Hidden Wounds.
Speaking of donations … At the end of the meeting, a drawing was made out of a bag of names of those who had sent in their meeting invitation RSVP. Dave Filippi’s name was drawn; so he was the winner of this $25 award. In addition, everyone had the opportunity to buy tickets for a cash prize raffle. Homer Pike was the winner of this drawing. This cash prize was $52. It certainly was a “heart-warming” sight to see both winners immediately hand over their cash prizes to Chris as a contribution to the Hidden Wounds!

The meeting was called to order by Charlie Weston, CFP, President of the Carolina Fence Association (CFA). Charlie presented details regarding the upcoming annual “By the Sea” meeting September 22-26 at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside in Wilmington, NC. He announced that the President of the American Fence Association (AFA), Rod Wilson, would be the featured speaker at the event. Charlie also announced the upcoming River Float scheduled for the weekend of July 8th and 9th at South Fork in New River, NC.

Attendees were honored by the special guest appearance of Susan E. Colson,Vice-President and Treasurer of Security Fence, Inc in Cookeville, TN. She is pictured her with her grand-daughter (Taylor Burton) who made the trip with her from Tennessee. Susan currently chairs the AFA Board of Governors. She provided an overview of how the AFA is set up and how it serves to assist its members. She also outlined how the association (currently with 30 member chapters) is now offering new and improved educational and certification options to help its members in today’s competitive markets. She welcomed attendees to sign up for the AFA’s email newsletter “Across the Fence.” She requested input from attendees … soliciting any ideas or suggestions that she could pass on to the AFA Board of Directors and Board of Governors.

|
Susan Colson announced that the Carolinas Chapter was the recepient of the AFA's Yearbook of the Year award. She is shown above presenting the award plaque to Charlie Weston.
|

Charlie immediately took time to recognize Randall Holman (the Chapter Vice-President) for all the work he put into the chapter yearbook.

Chapter Secretary Herby Denny (above) presented Charlie Weston a plaque to commemorate the completion of his 2 year term as Chapter President. Charlie, who is the President of Guardian Fence Suppliers in Columbia, SC, served faithfully and diligently. The chapter is also thankful for the great work done by Vice-President/Treasurer Randall Holman, Secretary Herby Denny and Executive Secretary Barb Covington. The newly elected Chapter officers are: President Bob Masten, Vice President/Treasurer Bobby Batchelor and Secretary Randall Holman. Bob Masten and Bobby Batchelor will also serve as Directors and they will be joined by Rob Ransdell. The new Executive Secretary is Jessica McEntire.

The featured speaker at the meeting was Dave Simpson, CAE. Dave presented a very beneficial update of recent construction-related legislation (with background information) coming out of the NC Assembly and Senate in Raleigh. Dave is the NC Building Director at Carolinas AGC. The Carolinas AGC is the largest chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America. The Carolinas AGC benefits contractors and suppliers in three primary ways:
a. Helping contractors grow revenues.
b. Helping contractors manage their workforce.
c. Helping contractors prosper in today's legal / regulatory environment.
